LIFE LIST
What’s On Yours?

2013 was a big year for me in a lot of ways. At the start I absolutely dreaded it due to a looming birthday, until a friend inspired me to make a bucket list for the year. It was a surprisingly uplifting exercise to think about what I wanted to accomplish personally and professionally, for just plain fun and for growth. Because of that proactive outlook, I got to check off a lot of items big and small on my list, and felt really good about it all by the end of the year. (And I got to add some great memories in my little black “Now or Never” book!)

Recently another friend told me she calls her bucket list a “life list” — I really like that! So while I have some big ticket items on my life list, here are a few manageable ones that I’ve got up for 2014…

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
(& A Mini Meltdown)

Happy Christmas Eve! But let me apologize for being M.I.A. I’m sure I’ve lost most of you by now (I’m scared to look at the analytics!), but it was completely unexpected. My daughter ended up having a nasty stomach virus (that closed down her classroom), my husband has the flu (still), and at one point last week after having to cancel a very important meeting with new clients, sitting in the middle of my living room cleaning up vomit, feeling the weight of the world on me as the realization strikes that I’m going to be letting all of my clients down over the next week and not be able to accomplish much on my enormous Christmas to-do list…I had a mini meltdown.

But you know, it’s at these times that you really have to pull yourself together, accept it, figure out a plan of attack, and move on. Otherwise, you become immobilized and nothing will get done. And just when I let go of having to be/do everything for everyone, my daughter with a 102F fever is crying out to me because she’s so miserable, and you think to yourself, “Nothing else really matters right now.”

Thankful…
(A Little Note)

Thankful for this little munchkin today, that I get to be her mommy and every day be amazed at her growth and personality, be her audience as she sings and dances with such heartfelt/closed-eyes emotion, laugh out loud at the funniest things she says in the most serious way, wonder how she can bring out happiness and warmth in everyone around her, let her be lovable and cuddly and excited even when I may not be. Because you see, there was a time when I wasn’t so sure she would ever come. And when I think back to that time, it makes me even more thankful that she finally did.

Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your gifts too!

MR. SMALL SHOP
“The Man Behind the Blog”

The husband is a man of few words…think Don Draper-ish, minus the scandal. So imagine how intrigued I was to read his responses to Victoria’s questionnaire for her column “The Man Behind the Blog” today on vmac+cheese. It took some prodding on my end to get him to participate (although he did enjoy threatening me with outrageous answers!), but thankfully he still loves me enough after 14 years to put up with this blogging nonsense that consumes so much of his wife’s time and energy.

All kidding aside, lucky for me, he is ever supportive of my biz endeavors, is secretly quite funny (very dry!), and is a wonderful father to our 4-year old little girl. Oh and yes, he is the poor unfortunate soul that has to deal with my perfectionistic tendencies while photographing my outfit posts! But I won’t embarrass him any further…just click over to Victoria’s “The Man Behind the Blog” today and you’ll get a taste of how most of our conversations go…LOL!

I SURVIVED
My First Juice Cleanse
(and You Can Too!)

5 REASONS WHY IT’S TOTALLY WORTH IT

In my last “MomME Files” post I mentioned I was going to kick off my summer with a 3-day juice cleanse from Ritual Wellness. I just completed it and have to say, it was easier than I thought! Granted, I don’t eat a lot of junk as it is, and when I do, I do it right (gourmet burgers and microbrews for me!). But even still, here are my five reasons why doing a juice cleanse was definitely worth my while…

“The MomME Files” #2:
Work It Out, Work It In

Happy Friday! It’s going to be a beautiful weekend here — officially the start of summer, woo hoo! But seeing how May is Women’s Health Month, I figured a diet and exercise post dedicated to all you moms and busy women out there was definitely in order!

I am often asked how I got back in shape, post-baby — I’m here to tell you, I have no idea. Kidding! Seriously though, it’s nothing drastic, and forever a work in progress. I ran track and played collegiate soccer so I’ve always been fairly active, but when I hit 30, my metabolism slowed big time. Fast forward “a few” years later, two knee surgeries, a baby, and suddenly I realized: there really isn’t going to be a “perfect” time to take better care of myself, so I might as well start somewhere. What did I/do I do? I’m by no means a personal trainer or nutritionist, but here’s some of what has worked for me… and as always, I’d love to hear what works for you!

GIVING BACK
6 Designers Doing It Right

I loved stumbling upon an article about six very well-known fashion designers and the ways in which they give back. I think it’s important that even in the image-obsessed world of high fashion, the leaders of the pack are paving the way for others to follow suit, charitably, and with grace. Let’s celebrate these very busy people that find the time in their very busy lives to step back, see the bigger picture, and strive to contribute their small part (summarized)…

SNAPSHOTS
‘Ohana Time

Aloha! As I mentioned, I’m spending some quality ‘ohana (family) time in Hawaii for my grandfather’s 90th birthday. It’s been wonderful and truly memorable thus far — a little break from the real world. A few snippets of life at a beach house in Kahala (rough, I know)…

“The MomME Files” #1:
Dress to Impress Yourself

1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5

Motherhood begins when you first start trying to conceive a child. You make changes in your life for the sake of a little one, but often we as women neglect our own needs for years (some, a lifetime). I personally don’t think it needs to be so black and white, and I strive for balance — I know that I am a better role model for my daughter if I am happy and have my own sense of self going on. So although I blushed and chuckled when asked by readers about my post-baby beauty and diet “tricks”, I realized there are little things that I’ve done to give myself “ME” back (and I bet you have too!). And then I thought, hey, great series for the blog! So, welcome to the first installment of “The MomME Files”…
