It’s my 9 year wedding anniversary today, and I’m thrilled to be sharing Our Love Story on Studio Swoon!

We were laughing when I pulled out some of the prints (yes prints!) to scan. Can’t believe how long ago that was!

p.s. Not sure if you’ve ever noticed, all my posts launch at 5:03 am. ;o)

Love this photo of the mid-century modern masters, with their masterpieces.

We’ve covered Saarinen and Platner in our series “Design Under the Influence” on La Dolce Vita. Today, let’s do BertoiaCome join me!

I’ve always wanted a Bertoia arm chair, to mix into a room like below (one of my absolute favorite rooms):

#LuckyFABB // The Mommy Factor

May 1st, 2012

So I bet everyone wants to know if I got to meet my design idol, Kelly Wearstler? Well…I didn’t even make it to the party.

Sunday afternoon we took our daughter to one of her best friend’s birthday parties. And if I hadn’t been gone all weekend at a volunteer retreat (on 5 hours of sleep) I might have felt ok tearing her away from her friends. But I didn’t. Let’s just say lots of tears were shed when I finally decided I wouldn’t make it in time after all. But it was my decision. And yes, for my kid.

Lots of subsequent worries followed that perhaps my “mommy” situation did not fit into the #LuckyFABB model. Would everyone be 15 years younger, single and fabulous? I’m not a fashionista, a risk-taker in fashion, WTH am I doing? Will I be irrelevant?

Client and mommy, Jennet Chow of Jellypop Shoes

I am happy to report that that was not the case at all! With panelists like entrepreneurial mommies Jessica Alba, Elizabeth Banks and Randi Zuckerberg, and musings on more than one occasion about “how do moms balance work and kids?” I felt connected and dare I say, NOT crazy for missing my one opportunity to meet my design idol.

Plus TWO of my brands were at the event! Jellypop had an adorable booth (and everyone was carrying the bags!), and Vanilla Bake Shop did a gorgeous dessert table for LeSportSac.

I was kinda like a proud momma.

I have so much more to share with you but I have to keep it short today (need to focus back on my clients!). Here’s what you have to look forward to in the next week or so if you’re interested:

1. How to Increase Search Engine Ranking

2. Top Social Media Trends of 2012

(Lucky does have taped sessions and tweeted photos from the event on their site if you just can’t wait!)

I got so much out of this experience both professionally and personally, and I hope @LuckyMagazine will come back west next year!

“You’re so LUCKY!” and other falsehoods…

April 30th, 2012

I’m at the Lucky FABB Conference today! In honor of this amazing opportunity, I wanted to touch on a topic that is close to my heart. Someone* recently said to me, “You’re so LUCKY to have your house in a magazine! I WISH I had the time to blog.”

After reading this article “15 Powerful Things Happy People Do Differently” that Lauren posted last week, and “The Real and Good Career” from Jess, it got me thinking about this idea of being “lucky” and “wishing” as if good things come to those who sit around and wait. False.

I guess I thought it was important to share with you that the “luck” that I appear to be having is the tangible result of a conscious decision I made about a year and a half ago, when I rebranded my company, myself, this site (v3 coming soon!), when I started up this blog, and have worked so hard since: to put myself, my brand, and my ideas out there every day, in order to connect with like-minded individuals and businesses, attract a certain quality of clientele, gain exposure through press and events, and build my own experiences both professionally and personally.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people complain about their situations, and do nothing about it; as if we are somehow bystanders in what happens to us. But on the contrary, only we are in control of how we shape our lives, aren’t we? Let’s take responsibility for our choices and our outlook, every day. (Not easy, I know.)

On the flip side, let’s take responsibility for our mistakes and shortcomings. Own them, work on them. I know for myself I still have a TON of figuring out to do, and there will always be challenges. And that’s ok.

In closing, look to this sampling of inspirational, proactive, hard-working, talented women who have recently changed their situations and continue to shape their lives:

Tamra of ever swoon
Liz of Elizabeth Schneider Style Consultant
Mackenzie of Design Darling
Alex of Alexandra Berlin Design
Taylor of Glitter Guide
Meg of MIMI+MEG
Jen of MadeByGirl
Danielle Moss and Alaina Kaczmarski of The Everygirl
Amber of VENZedits/ RewardStyle

I’m gonna guess they’ll all tell you, it’s not “luck”.

KELLY WEARSTLER // Spring 2012

April 27th, 2012

So just last week I said to my husband, “I would DIE if I met Kelly Wearstler.” After all, she is my design idol and definitely in the Top 3 people I would absolutely love to meet. Well wouldn’t you know, I may get that opportunity this Sunday night! I am still pinching myself that I got invited to a Lucky FABB kickoff cocktail party hosted by Ms. KW herself. Can you believe it?! I can’t. Really.

I am of course fully versed in her interiors work, but needed to check out her site to be up to date on her latest Spring line, and I love it! Her style is like no other — contemporary, edgy, chic…

I feel like her interiors experience is translated into a strong sense of materiality in her patterns…what do you think?

Monday I’ll be at the Lucky FABB Conference all day — excited, nervous, thrilled…all kinds of emotions going on over here! Anyone else going? Please say hi! I’ll be the one with a huge grin all day.

Have a great weekend!

[Guest Post] The Urban Slant // Jonathan Adler

April 26th, 2012

Please welcome Julia from The Urban Slant!

She’s young, smart, stylish and adorable, with an eye for the pretty and fabulous. If you haven’t already met Julia and her page The Urban Slant, then you’re missing out! Case in point:

Happy Wednesday Talk Shop-ers! Julia here from The Urban Slant. I was so excited when my favorite lady, Erika, asked me to do a little guest post today. I first heard of her when she was designing ever swoon, and I did just that – swoon! I adore her blog, her business, her home…just about everything! *girl crush*

I’m completely obsessed with Jonathan Adler. I just love how he uses bright patterns and bold fabrics, all while remaining sophisticated.

If I had my way, this would be my living room. A girl can dream, right? After all, isn’t that what this crazy blogosphere is supposed to do – encourage dreaming!

chair // throw // end table // lamp // bench // coffee table //
pouf // pillow// couch // mirror // tree sculpture

Reasons I love this space:

1. Mix of fabrics and metals

2. Bright color

3. Comfort

I would love to just curl up on that bold pink chair with a good book and a hot cup of coffee.

Thank you for having me today, Erika! I sure hope all you lovely readers hop on over to my little ole blog The Urban Slant where you can find daily reads on everything from fashion to food.

INTERVIEW // Designer Gabriel Hendifar

April 24th, 2012

Be still my heart.

By now you have probably seen the stunning work of designer Gabriel Hendifar. If you haven’t, you’re in for a treat. Every image is a feast for the eyes, and my heart beats a little faster at the site of the richness, the textures, the drama, the flair…ahhhhh

…Back to reality! I had the opportunity to correspond with him recently (a fellow Bruin, I might add!) and get a few essential questions answered for us:

1. When first starting a project, what are some ways in which you get the process going?

It’s a rather playful process. Sometimes I sketch, sometimes I take things apart and put them back together again. There is a lot of exploration and a good amount of walking away and waiting to see if an idea sticks. Stickiness is the key. We can make a lot of beautiful things, but the essential ones stick. Jeremy, my partner, really hones me in. He’s an eagle eye and a great editor. We start to bounce and build ideas off of each other, and good things become better things.

2. Where do you find inspiration?

This goes back to form and material. I see interesting forms and shapes in the world everywhere. Architecture, art, fashion.  Similarly, materials are inspirational and determine form.

The most elusive inspiration is emotional—when I aspire to give an object a feeling or disposition — a playful lamp, or a nonchalant chandelier. It can be silly, but I think it is in these little choices we make that objects are elevated and given life.

3. What motivates you as a designer?

I was trained as a costume and scenic designer and have been primarily designing womenswear for the past 10 years. I really value an interdisciplinary approach, and the common denominator is my concern for proportion and material. These choices signify intent in an object — whether a jacket, a lamp, or a room.  Ultimately, the day-to-day motivation is to find the boiling point where all of your inspirations and past experiments come together to form something new and beautiful — where proportion and material strike a perfect balance.

4. What do you strive for in your designs?

A sense of timelessness is very important. And often that is more about the heft and material of an object than about its style. Something that feels thoughtfully conceived is timeless to me, whether inspired by classical architecture, or modern art. These are the kinds of interiors that most inspire me as well—spaces where objects of significance are collected and speak to each other in a way that transcends stylistic boundaries.

5. What career advice would you give to those starting in your field?

Play! Make what you want to see in the world. Be informed enough about what’s going on in the design world to be able to disregard it.

6. Where do you shop for your projects?! I know we are all lusting after the pieces you find.

Inheritance on Beverly. Great mix of curated objects and modern design. Online: deringhall.com. And I’m kind of an eBay junkie.

8. One tip you can give us to create better spaces?

Invest in good lighting. It’s the room’s jewelry.

If you didn’t know, Gabriel also has an amazing line of light fixtures: Apparatus. Most of the standout pieces in the images above he designed himself! And he shared that they are looking to produce furniture and decorative accessories as well…waiting with bated breath…

No seriously, I can’t get enough. I want more!

Don’t you?

FIDDLE ME THIS //

April 23rd, 2012

Fiddle leaf fig trees

It takes me a while sometimes to realize how much I love something until I see it a hundred times and say to myself every time, oooh. And maybe because it’s spring, I finally did it: I added two fiddle leaf fig trees in our dining room!

These are a slightly smaller leaf version (“little fiddle”) which is great since I don’t have a ton of space here, and I don’t want a jungle in my house. Plus I really like the shape, and I think over time they’ll get to a perfect height that will complement any room quite nicely.

Loving these examples…the sizes and shapes seem to be well-balanced in each space, and add just the right amount of textural interest:

Anna Burke via Lonny

Jonathan Adler via Elle Decoration France

Tom Delavan via Trad Home

Lee Kleinhelter via Lonny

This is a big step for me guys! I don’t know if you noticed in my house tour I don’t have any house plants!  So now the question is: what kind of pot? A basket? A contemporary nondescript pot? Thoughts?

Definitely getting a colorful runner for the table or a colorful Turkish rug. I cleaned off the bar for now because it got a little cluttered, so now I’m on the hunt for two low symmetrical pieces to flank the tray. Decorating never ends!

Hope you had a productive weekend!

**ADDITIONAL INFO**
I’m already getting inquiries, so hopefully this answers some of the questions:

Where to purchase: I called our local nursery (Armstrong) to ask if they had them. The man I spoke with said he would order a few for the following week’s shipment.

The type: I lucked out that they had the ‘Little Fiddle’ version (Ficus Lyrata Compacta), which have smaller leaves that are closer together, giving a more dense appearance. Since they are more compact, they won’t grow as wildly large but they should still grow tall, and the leaves will get larger. I debated between this one and the larger leafed version (Ficus Lyrata) but the ones in stock were not grafted and were more column-like in shape.

Care: From what they told me, these like shade and only need water when the soil surface is dry. Fertilize with indoor plant food every 3-4 weeks. I’ve also read that they like smaller pots, so don’t repot until new leaves look stunted. I am not a plant person at all, but thought I might be able to handle this!

Price: I saw a variety from $49 to $109 for the 10″ and the 12″ types.

Hope this helps!

VINTAGE REMIX // Book Party Recap

April 20th, 2012

I’m over on La Dolce Vita today at 9:30am PDT** giving a recap of Kishani Perera’s Vintage Remix book party Wednesday night — check it out!

Had a great time meeting a bunch of designers and bloggers only known to me previously through twitter. Plus, (did you see on Instagram?) I got to meet Gary Oldman…Gary friggin’ Oldman (he is a client/friend of Kishani’s and wrote the foreword in her book). I was so stunned I don’t remember anything I said, which is probably a good thing. I am not usually so star struck — in fact, my husband was laughing at me — but come on, it’s Gary Oldman.

Do you ever wonder if celebs actually want you to converse with them, rather than gush AT them? You kinda feel like you just used them for a photo or an autograph. Sorry Mr. Oldman.

Back on topic, Kishani’s book is AMAZING! Sometimes you feel like if you’ve seen one design book, you’ve seen them all. And I’m not gonna lie, there have been a few recently where I found myself disappointed. But Vintage Remix is so so good. A must-have for anyone that has my same taste, i.e. eclectic, lived-in, chic, sophisticated, vintage…real!

…it’s coming back to me now, I think I called him a legend…

But he is!

**Until then, don’t miss the live streaming StyleMint event happening today at 9am PDT/12pm PDT! Olsen…Zoe…WhoWhatWear. I’m just saying. Watch it here.
