“Live Sparkly”

Society Social: impeccably styled, instantly recognizable

Happy Wednesday! I’ve got another “Design Under the Influence” up on La Dolce Vita, and this time around, I decided to have some fun with the whole bar cart trend! Won’t you join me over there today for a little clink-clink inspiration?

The resurgence of our favorite piece of festive furniture is in no small part due to bar cart powerhouse, Society Social. In addition to the most darling collection of bar carts and tables, they produce equally adorable chairs, pillows, rings, and even cozy hostess gowns! I’m always impressed by the growing product line, and stellar branding in general.

The Society Social Manifesto Magalog

The Society Social website

The (incredibly sweet) genius behind the brand is Roxy, my new hero. She created her company from scratch, and goes above and beyond with every piece she puts out. I often use Society Social as an example of unique, consistent brand messaging — whether it’s the first impression from the website and its super cute illustrations, or further exploration into the extensive “magalog” and its gorgeously styled photographs, or an email newsletter you feel so giddy about opening up to learn something new and useful. How does she do this?

1. Create a motto/tagline and a mood/voice from which all of your materials originate. Be clear, concise, consistent.

2. Create your toolbox of brand elements, and stick to it: a color scheme, patterns, elements, ornaments, fonts —pieces that you can throw together in various combinations, yet are still true to your brand. The goal: instant brand recognition.

3. Details count: be sure to infuse #1 and #2 in even the smallest of places, like the confirmation page for a newsletter signup, or your Facebook profile pic. Brand EVERYTHING.

4. Do it once, do it right! Hire as many professionals as you can, and invest the proper amount of time and care into the process: copywriters, photographers, stylists, graphic designers, web developers, social media gurus — ain’t nothing wrong with having a team of experts collaborating for you (unless you are superhuman and work 24 hours a day). I can’t tell you how many inquiries I get from companies that have wasted time and money because they didn’t invest in their brand! The result is always regret, realization, redo.

5. Be creative about how and where you express your brand: collaborate with others that can help you do so (i.e. fellow bloggers), and utilize the many social media resources out there to be had: Pinterest, twitter, Facebook, blogging — and utilize them often. (Study how Roxy does it…learn it!)

6. Don’t stop at the launch! Look for ways to maximize your target audience, such as expanding into similar markets. Keep reinventing what you have to offer to remain relevant.

7. Love it, live it. If you don’t, it will show. If you don’t, hire others that can step in when you’re not feeling the love. But you have to START with the love. It’s a marriage of sorts, and you’ve got to start off with those tingling butterflies from the get-go!

But of course, you have to have a great offering first and foremost! Here are some of Society Social’s pieces I am itching to get my hands on!

Please visit the Society Social website for more fabulous products and branding inspiration!

Marni for H&M

February 21st, 2012

…at a store near you, 3.8…

The next big collab after Jason Wu for Target might be Marni for H&M. After spying these sneak peeks, I am particularly excited about the color block pieces and the chunky bracelets. Will this collection finally get me to stand in those long lines at H&M?

Get ready for takeoff, March 8th! (I think I might need those chunky sandals too. Hmmm…)

While I Was Out…

February 20th, 2012

I’m baaaack!

It’s crazy to feel like so much has happened in only a week away from the blog world. I am definitely that annoying person butting into your conversation or interrupting at the end of a movie, “What’s going on? What happened? What did I miss?” Besides going to bed at a decent time every night (what a concept, right?), wrapping up two projects and signing four more, and FINALLY getting on Instagram, here’s what my week looked like:

In case you missed it, my home was featured on the Glitter Guide last week! The response was truly overwhelming and I so appreciated everyone’s kind words!

I received an award from my peers in the Junior League of Orange County, CA for the work I did on our charity fundraiser’s materials last year. I was so surprised and really honored, as I admire these ladies like you have no idea.

I got to take a quick trip to Palm Springs to judge the ADDY advertising awards. It was a great experience and although my brain was pretty fried by the end, I would totally do it again!

It wasn’t all work — we got to squeeze in a date night at the new hot spot Tinto. Basque tapas, people: duck confit with black cherry, pork belly with honey lacquer, donuts with date-olive oil ice cream…yah, I know. Insanely good.

After seeing this A.Wang-ish rocker chic iPhone case on Gold & Gray, I HAD. TO. HAVE. ONE. Mine now. ;o)

And thankfully, I got lots of “unrushed” time with my munchkin.

Oh and I guess, find me on Instagram so I can follow you!

Hope you had a great week too! xoxo

Sparkling Today…on the Glitter Guide!

February 14th, 2012

What a perfect Valentine’s gift!!!

As you can imagine, I am so incredibly honored that the Glitter Guide asked me (!) to share my home with their readers! I had such fun styling the shots and working with the very talented photographer Jennifer Daigle, and I could not be happier with the results. If you get a chance, I’d love for you to check out the feature!

For others, please check out the feature on the Glitter Guide!

But wouldn’t you know it, I had just decided to take the week off of blogging to wrap up a few projects. So if there are any newcomers, I’ll be back on Monday! Thank you for visiting!

TIME OUT.

February 10th, 2012

How is it that 12 hour days aren’t enough anymore?

With wrapping up a few big projects and getting started on a few new ones, I haven’t been able to put as much time into blogging…and it bums me out. It’s discouraging when you’re spread so thin over multiple areas, you don’t feel like you are excelling in any one particular area — especially when you’re working so darn hard!

But I got really sick last week and I honestly think it was exhaustion. Just plain ol’ exhaustion. Even though I don’t wanna, I know what I need to do to take care of myself, my clients and all those potentials I haven’t had a moment to email back! Take a week off from blogging. The response from this blog has been incredible! But I’m a biz owner first, and a blogger second — my clients have to be my first priority.

Plus, things change once you have kids. All of a sudden you find you don’t have the time or the energy to do all of those great ideas you’ve concocted for yourself in the middle of the night. And you don’t want to either — with those few precious free hours you have a day, you’d rather take your daughter to her first dance class (like I did on Wednesday!) and see her face light up and talk about it for hours.

( My tiny dancer )

But I sincerely hope you will all be back Monday, 2/20! I’m giddy with excitement about some new developments: first, what that house photo shoot was all about, and second, a new site design in the works!

I said I would take care of myself, didn’t I? Trying to be better about that, really I am!

Off to focus on those awesome projects I have! I’m a lucky girl.

With gratitude,

[Guest Post] Fashion Truffles // Mint & Seafoam

February 9th, 2012

Please welcome Viv from Fashion Truffles!

I’m feeling quite lucky today that Viv of Fashion Truffles is stopping by, bringing with her a style that invigorates me on a daily basis. And today she is inspiring us with so much pretty I don’t know where to start! Ahhh! Thank blog for her.

Hi small shop readers! I’m Viv from the fashion and lifestyle blog, Fashion Truffles. I was so incredibly honored when one of my favorite blogger friends, Erika, asked me to write a guest post for her super stylish blog. I’m a huge fan of hers – her taste is just flawless, don’t you agree?! So here it goes…

Green, green, everywhere green. Mint and seafoam green are my favorite green hues. These colors pair beautifully with gold and camel or cream accessories and, in my opinion, are the most flattering pastel tone. Is it me or do mint and/or seafoam green look good on just about any skin tone?! How do you feel about these pretty green tones?

ANDY WARHOL // Polaroids

February 8th, 2012

…art in themselves…

Today I’m really excited to bring you a “Design Under the Influence” at La Dolce Vita on Andy Warhol’s portraits! The art historian and graphic designer in me is a big fan of Warhol’s work, and I’m thrilled about his lasting influence on interior designers today.

The Polaroids that Andy Warhol would use to create his silkscreen prints and paintings are kind of like Degas’ sketches of ballerinas, or Rodin’s miniature clay models: they provide a glimpse into the artistic process. My favorite of course would have to be Debbie Harry’s polaroids; she’s unapologetic in her attitude, and stunning because of it.

But these babies have become art in themselves: the Polaroid above right of Farrah Fawcett recently sold for $43,750! Thousands of others are on display around the country, through the continued efforts of The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. In the Bay Area, check out a selection of Warhol’s Polaroids from 1970-1987 at the UC Berkeley Art Museum until May 20th. (Click here for a full list of 180 universities and colleges to receive selections from Warhol’s 28,500 Polaroids.)

GLAM MA’AM // Styling Perfection

February 3rd, 2012

…when fashion, art and interiors collide…

The past few days I’ve been deep into editing my house shoot photos, so perhaps I’m hyperaware of styling in general. But the exceedingly talented Erin and Stephanie over at The Coveteur make it tough not to say to yourself, “I wish my room/wall/closet/LIFE looked like that.” Come on ladies, leave us something in our own homes we can be mildly satisfied with…
