Please welcome Jess of The Aestate!
Today I have the pleasure of hosting the immensely talented Jess of The Aestate! I so admire her style and skills — yes, those are HER original watercolors below. Can you believe it? I am already lining up clients to collaborate with her!
Hi, Jessica from The Aestate here, so honored Erika invited me to guest post on one of my all-time favorite blogs, Small Shop! Speaking of hosting, I have been doing a lot of that in my own home lately, and I want to take a moment to look beyond the bare essentials to the 13 items that will make your guest room feel cozy…
1. Fresh Flowers: There is really nothing that says “Welcome” like a pretty vase filled with fresh flowers.
2. Luggage Rack (Dransfield & Ross Hoof Leg Luggage Rack)
3.Waste Bin
4. Scented Candle & Matches (Tubereuse Rouge Candle: diptyqueparis.com)
5. Tissues: Not glamorous, but like the waste bin, they’ll be missed the moment they’re needed.
6. Alarm Clock: A good phone/iPad alarm back-up plan if they’re in town on business.
7. Pen & Paper: Its nice when people assume you’re a creative genius with brilliant ideas that may strike at a moment’s notice. (“I Met and Liked” Notebooks: archiegrand.com)
8. XL Robe: Not that you’re running a day spa, but if the guest bath is not attached to the room, it beats scurrying across the hallway in a towel.
9. Good Reading Light (Jana Desk Lamp: tonichome.com)
10. Magazines: I like to spread mine around the house so the Mr. doesn’t know exactly how many I’m hoarding anyway.
11. Pitcher & Glass (Hobnail Pitcher & Fleur de Lis Glass: anthropologie.com)
12. Snacks: I’m like an Italian grandmother, I always feel like my guests aren’t eating enough.
13. Wooden Hangers: Toss the plastic or (God forbid) wire hangers and splurge a little on the wooden ones, they’re $4/ 8 pack at Ikea.
What special touches do you add to make your guests feel at home?

Fabulous list! All these are things I appreciate having when I’m away from home.
There is nothing better than a cozy guest room when visiting someone! And some people just don’t know how to do it. Love this component breakdown and the watercolors are gorge. xoxo

Thanks for your sweet comments everyone, and thank you for having me, Erika!! xoxo
Jessica is the best! She is so talented at art and all things interior design. I love her watercolors!
This list is wonderful! Definitely need to invest in a few of these staples!
oh my god, i love jessica..these watercolor prints are incredible. and i love making my guests feel pampered..i’d love for their stay to be even better than a hotel. And I’m pretty bad about forcing people to eat more food. Ask my husband, every 5 mins I’m asking him if he wants me to make him a sandwich or if he’s hungry. Food = love in my book hah

This came at the perfect time! We’re hosting guests in a couple weeks so I will be taking this list to the store this weekend. Such great ideas, and while it seems so easy to do I actually am missing most of the items on here, haha. Thanks Jessica, and your watercolors are gorgeous!!!
I can’t believe that she painted all of those…so cute !!

WOW, thats some crazy good watercoloring! Makes for such a charming post. Thanks for the introduction!
These are lovely illustrations! At first glance I wouldn’t think they’re water color, they’re so perfectly perfect!
Love these! My grandmother was a watercolor artist, so they always feel homey and special to me – plus Jess’ work is so fresh and modern. Thanks for the intro!

I’m just endlessly inspired by your talent, Jessica! Watercolors? Are you kidding me!?
Lovely + delightful watercolor illustrations! Reminds me of my art/design school days, sketching my favorite things and places–it’s been a while. Inspiring me to shut down my computer for a couple hours and bust out my brushes!
Laughing at #12. I always feel like my guests aren’t eating enough too!
I am visiting from Jess’ blog today! So excited to find a new great blog!
I have to draw the line at snacks.
I mean. You’re not running a B&B.
Absolutely lovely! I saw that you posted this on Instagram and have been wanting to check it out ever since! Jessica is so talented!!

I like having fresh towels and washclothes neatly laid out as well. To go along with that, having a place to hang them in the room is helpful. Lastly, if at all possible, I have a tv and a dvd player in the spare room. I have stayed with friends for a few days, and sometimes want to go lay down early. Unfortunately, I don’t fall asleep easily, so I like to fall asleep with the tv (with the sleep timer set). Having the tv allows your guest to feel comfortable to stay in the room if they wake up too early or just need a bit of a break.
(I also like to have extra toothbrushes and contact cases on hand… just in case)
Thanks for your post!
Thank you for this! I just pinned it.
I leave towels (w/a turbie twist for the ladies), loofahs and a basket with scented body wash and lotion that they can take. no, it’s not a B&B but I enjoy spoiling my guests. puppy treats for my four legged guests are a must as well =)
This is so great! I am getting guests tomorrow and looking for some last minute inspiration! Pinning!
