AWARD SHOW STYLE // Old Hollywood

January 16th, 2012

…a glimpse back…

Since I am sure last night’s Golden Globes red carpet will be covered much more thoroughly and creatively by others than I ever could, I thought it would be fun to look at award show style of the past.

Audrey Hepburn & Grace Kelly, 1956

Ava Gardner, 1954

Jack Lemmon and his wife, 1957

Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman, 1958

Ingrid Bergman and Lucille Ball, 1959

Warren Beatty with Natalie Wood, 1962
(Can you hear “You’re So Vain” in your head too?)

Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews, 1964
(Did you know Julie Andrews played My Fair Lady’s Eliza on stage?)

Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty, 1966
(They really don’t look anything alike!)

Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, 1972

George Hamilton and Alana Collins, 1972

Raquel Welch, 1973

Marisa Berenson, 1976
(gasp!)

Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston, 1976

Robert Redford, 1974

Okay you got me, this last one is actually from The Great Gatsby. But the man looks good in a tux. Can you blame me?

So what did you think of the Globes?

  1. Very fun to take a look back on those photos. They all had such beautiful style. I really thought there were a lot of stunning looks on the red carpet this year with very few misses (which I have covered on my blog). Always a fun show to watch. I look forward to it every year. Great post, Erika!

  2. I love that you did this! All these classic beauties look amazing.

The Golden Globes are waiting for me on the DVR to watch tonight! It’s been fun hearing all the buzz around who wore what and how (and of course the WHAT were they thinking!). I like the timeless outfit choices the most, the ones where you look back ages later and still think people – like Audrey Hepburn – look amazing!

  4. Bethany says:

was Ava Gardner really that beautiful?!? I knew Raquel Welch was, but WHEW Ava was pretty!!

  5. totally missed it, but I love your retro recap. Everyone looks more glamorous in black in white.

  6. Am I crazy, or does young George Hamilton resemble Bradley Cooper? I’m seeing a resemblance! I love this post. Such a good idea and these pictures are so very glamorous! I wasn’t in love with the Globes fashion this year at all, so this is refreshing to see!

  7. ooh, it is fun to see the “globes” in past tense! real beauties out there back then!

  8. Chelsea says:

Mmm. No I can’t blame you. That is a great looking man in a great looking tux. I love these photos. Thank you so much for posting them. xo

  9. Gorgeous! I actually did not watch the Golden Globes – but I LOVED these photos. Old Hollywood is my favorite… the glamour, the starlets.. the men… I love!

I totally thought you would be one of the few who COULD recap creatively. This throwback IS creative so there you go.

Paul Newman was HOTATATAT. And Raquel. Well she must be a different species. Gorgeous.

  12. Julia says:

Omg. Best post. I love looking back at classic styles. And ending with Robert Redford was perfect — so sexy. So so so so.

  13. Neda says:

Love looking at these glamorous photos! I watched the Globes and wasn’t crazy about any one dress. Some were super wierd and others just boring. I thought overall the men looked way better! :)

  14. i just love this look back into the past…old hollywood glamour is just the best…simply classic & just downright gorgeous! XO brynn

LOVED this post! I never get tired of seeing vintage black and white photos. So glamorous, and so fun to see how fashion has evolved. Thanks for sharing Erika!

Love! The red carpet last night was very disappointing :(

  18. Such classy times in Hollywood. Love the Globes!

  19. Seriously, is it possible for Hollywood to ever be as classy as it was in the 1930′s/1940′s ever again? With the exception of MGM’s total monopoly of the city, you can’t beat the tact, glamour and appeal that it and these stars used to have. Love the shot of Audrey and Grace at the top! :)

Great post! Love the old Hollywood glam photos. Raquel Welch was a knock out! She is obviously still beautiful but WOW!

So incredible. I wish I lived back then.

  23. How did that dress stay in place on Raquel Welch? Defying gravity! A gorgeously glamourous collection…ah such elegance…

  24. This is such a great twist of a post instead of just doing a recap, and Audrey Hepburn & Grace Kelly, oh my gosh, just breathtaking. Can I look like that? Old Hollywood is so beautiful.

  25. So great. Thank you for not posting another recap of red carpet looks. This was the ONLY awards show related post I read. :)

  26. I can’t even put into words how much I love this post. Brava!

  27. I am completely obsessed with this post. No words. Amazingness.
